Appropriate Antibiotic Use in Clinical Dentistry: 2024 Update
Antibiotics have improved health outcomes since the discovery of penicillin and its widespread use during WW II. However, their overuse and misuse has now threatened their effectiveness and led to superbug infections that are untreatable. This course will provide antibiotic stewardship guidance and cover the risks of inappropriate antibiotic use, including antibiotic resistance. It will also review the latest ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines related to when antibiotics are appropriate for patients with odontogenic infections. Prescribing recommendations as well as when and why antibiotics are indicated or not indicated will be covered.
The topic of antibiotic prophylaxis , particularly related to patients with prosthetic joints has been controversial with multiple changes and recommendations over the last 20 years. Are you confused about when it is necessary to use antibiotic prophylaxis for patients with prosthetic joints, cardiac valve replacements, kidney dialysis, AV shunts, transplant patients and other medical conditions? This course will make you confident you are treating these patients appropriately.

Temporomandibular Dysfunction: A Physical Therapy Perspective (this course will be presented in AM and PM sessions)
Temporomandibular dysfunction can negatively impact dental care for patients who battle this condition. These patients often have restricted mouth opening and/or pain that makes dental procedures difficult. This can lead to avoidance of routine dental care as a result. Unfortunately, the topic of TMD is not covered well in most professional education programs, so it can be hard to identify and treat this condition. Interdisciplinary care amongst healthcare providers can improve outcomes for patients with TMD and improve quality of life.
This presentation will share an overview of what TMD is and how it presents in the clinic. You will see a live, hands-on demonstration of how a physical therapist evaluates and treats patients with TMD, and clinical pearls will be shared that can be used in the dental clinic. This presentation will also cover the close relationship of the cervical spine with the jaw and how posture plays a role in patients with TMD. Lastly, you will learn briefly about benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV, which commonly occurs in a dental office as patients lie back in the chair or sit up at the end of an appointment.

LIVE Radiography Update (fulfills mandatory 2-hour requirement for licensure)
According to the Ohio State Dental Board, all radiographers regardless of issue date are required to renew their licenses in 2024. Once you have completed this 2-hour session, you will be issued a certificate that you must submit to OSDB in order to renew your license.

Mastering Composite Restorations
When faced with fractured or broken down teeth or dentition, often the choices are limited to crowns or extraction and replacement with implants, fixed bridges or removable partial dentures. Limited finances, an aging population and the improvement of direct esthetic bonded composite expand treatment options.
During this course, you will learn how to do routine Class 2 posterior composites, direct composite veneers, post and cores with the core serving as a direct interim crown, direct bonded bridges, and salvaging severely fractured teeth with composite. Complex onlays can often replace crowns when a patient fractures one or more cusps. These techniques will help you solve challenges which you will encounter on a daily basis in your private practice. Clinical cases will demonstrate the versatility of well-done composite restorations, giving the esthetics and durability of porcelain with the advantage of simple repair and lower cost.

The Power of Antimicrobials - Silver Diamine Fluoride and Povidone Iodine
Dental caries is the most common noncommunicable disease worldwide. Preventive measures usually involve a combination of dietary counseling, oral hygiene, and fluoride application. None of these interventions specifically targets Streptococcus mutans, the chief pathogen for caries.
This first part of this course is designed for any dental professional that is interested in learning about the uses of silver diamine fluoride. Completion of the 1 hour hands-on clinical and 1 hour didactic course by Ohio EFDA's and Hygienists will meet the OSDB's educational requirement to apply SDF.
The second part will discuss povidone-iodine, a widely used antiseptic product for skin, wounds, and mucous membranes, and notably affects bacteria. Povidone-iodine reduces glucan production, which is vital for polysaccharide production. Polysaccharides are the sticky substances that allow bacteria to cling to teeth. Positive outcomes have been demonstrated for PVP-I in controlling the incidence of new carious lesions for children at risk of developing extensive caries.
